Whole30: Day 1

I decided to do the "Whole30" for a few reasons:
  1. I'd gotten a little off-track with my workouts, since we began our transition from Texas to Oregon.
  2. I was "celebrating" (i.e. drinking wine and "NorCal Margaritas") a little too regularly, since the move.
  3. I encourage others to commit to 30-days of super clean eating, but have never been this completely strict (I eat super clean, but enjoy random non-Paleo treats, like ice cream, wine, or tequila 2-3x a month)...I felt it was time for a sort of "reset". 
Here are my tips to staying on-track throughout the next 30-days:
Visit the Whole9 website...they have some really great resources.

I think that the "Whole30 Success Guide" is worth every penny, if you are new to this way of eating or are not familiarwith what you should(n't) be eating and why. It offers guidance, tips, recipes, and a really handy shopping list.

And,

I would also suggest that you:


  1. Clear out your pantry and cupboards (no one has, or should have, the willpower to not eat junk if it's in their home)
  2. Fill your fridge with colorful veggies that inspire you to cook/create
  3. Check out your local Farmer's Market and get excited about food...talk to the farmers and learn where you food comes from
  4. Find a handful of easy recipes that can be switched up with the use of a different spice blend. I do this with roasted chicken, often. Penzeys is a great resource for spices. 
  5. Do it with a friend that you know will hold you accountable and who will not test your willpower. I'm doing it with my husband.
  6. Take "Before" and "After" pictures and measurements. 
  7. Be prepared! Always have a good protein and fat source available, at all times...if you're new to this way of eating you will likely experience ravenous snack attacks...good fat (coconut, avocado, and olives) and protein will save you. 
  8. Post your pictures and get others to rally around you! Feel free to post on my Facebook "Wall" anytime...there are so many great people and resources online.
  9. Remember to have fun, enjoy what you're eating, and always remember why you chose to do this in the first place!
Here's what I ate today:
 


 


Breakfast:
Coffee (12oz) w/Coconut Milk (2oz)
1 Duck Egg, 1 Chicken Egg, and 1 Mini Frittata (1.5 Eggs+1oz Ground Buffalo+2T. Roasted Vegetables+Cilantro) 

Lunch:
4oz Burger Patty (leftover from last night's BBQ) w/Lettuce, Avocado (1/4), Tomato Slice, Bubbie's Pickle

Dinner:
"Better Butter Chicken"* (6oz) w/Spaghetti Squash (1/2 Medium Squash)

*I added a little cinnamon, some smoked paprika, and used coconut oil instead of ghee. I also cooked it in my dutch oven for 1.5 hours, so that it would cook while we worked out. The squash was cut in half, rubbed with coconut oil, sprinkled with cinnamon and sea salt, and cooked along with the chicken, at 350F.

We will be opening CrossFit Oregon City soon and I'm realizing that as I put time and energy in to training and coaching others, continuing education, and opening our "box", I also need to take time for my own training...balance is going to be key, but sometimes you've got to do something extreme to initiate that balance. Though I know that eating "Whole30" 24/7 wouldn't work for me (and, I know that this is not the message that Whole9 is trying to convey- read here), I know that right now it's just what I need to get back on track in order to reach my goals and become a stronger, more lean, and more energized me- for myself, my family, my friends, and my clients.

Just had my son Mayson 6 weeks ago. I am doing this for both of us. I want him to be as healthy as possible. Everytime I want to cheat, I look at him and I make a better choice.

Hubby and I would love to do "Whole30." We are trying to decide when to do it, though. We are going on vacation next week and in July we have 2 family birthday parties. In August, we have our son's birthday and wedding anniversary. All of this will make super clean eating very difficult. I am looking forward to seeing your results!

Keep up the fab work Jen! It's great to hear your honesty about the splurges and focusing on balance in life. I'v been eating clean for quite sometime now but had rather too many splurges back end of last year so in January this year I started a "whole30" but it has been going ever since..not sure how many days that is now :-)

When my husband told me that this involved giving up dairy, the first thing I thought of was the mild in my coffee...how on earth would I survive?! When I saw you had your coffee with coconut milk I was pleasantly surprised...there is hope and maybe I can do this. I haven't done the Whole 30, still arming myself with knowledge so I'm prepared.

How's the coffee with coconut milk?

Jen~ I totally get that. I think that there's always going to be a reason NOT to do anything. This month we have our 7-year wedding anniversary and a visit to the beach to visit Scott's grandma...there's ALWAYS sunset cocktails on the deck. The thing, for me, is that I know two things:

1. I can save the champagne for July...and, as corny as it sounds, June 19 shouldn't be the only day that we celebrate our life together. July will work just fine. ;)
2. I can still enjoy the sunset and ocean view with grandma...without a cocktail in-hand.

Definitely the libations for me...you?

I think what it comes down to is that this is something that I want to do, not have to do. And, yes...I can make a choice not to at any point...I just really don't want to.

The coconut milk in hot coffee is good, if you drink it fairly quickly...it has a tendency to create a film on the top, if not. I prefer mine iced, so I put coffee+coconut milk+lots of ice in a shaker and shake. I love it! Sort of like an iced latte. Just make sure to brew your coffee a little stronger than normal to make up for the melting ice.

Congrats on the box and all the hard work! I absolutely love your site. I'm in a similar boat- trying to stay paleo, busy training others, going to school and working so I find this post to be very inspiring! It's giving me the courage to go Whole30! :)

Yeah...it was just one of those things where I was traveling and visiting friends and family and just a little here and a little there. For me, it's always about the wine (especially when I visited my cousin in the CA wine country) and libations. It's always just one or two, but those add up. I also found that just before we moved, we were making exception to visit our favorite gelato place...what was once an every other week treat, was becoming a every other day event. :)

So, this will be good. And, as far as the workouts...I was just doing a lot of working out on my own, so I wasn't really pushing myself like I would at a CrossFit box or with other people.

Jen, I am so happy that you and I started Whole 30 on the exact same day (now I hope we can lean on each other a bit because I love your recipes and enthusiasm). I started it because I have my crutch foods that I will start off by eating every once in a while and then it becomes a daily thing. While 80-90% of my Paleo "way of eating" (I hate the word "diet" for something that is so much more than that) was pretty clean, it was the 10-20% that was hurting me in terms of performance, staying as lean as I would like, recovery, etc. The only challenge for me is going to be finishing the last 9 days in Bali!!

I just filled up my calendar with my month of WODs, found a great local Farmer's Market to buy my goods, and I'm just excited for what lie ahead!

Two peas in a pod are we. ;) I just wish that we lived closer so that we could have some cooking dates! I'm excited to be challenging myself with you...those who WOD together and eat clean together...will be super healthy and strong together. Something like that. :)

Can't wait to hang out in July! And, have fun in Bali! Jeez...I'm the jet-setter!?

I did a Whole 30 a couple of weeks ago and loved it! Sadly, I quickly felt my new formed habits being pushed out of the way by old ones after a few eventful weekends. So I'm doing it again! And this time I've enlisted a co-worker and my poor boyfriend to do it with me (he was quite the advocate for including cheese and protein powder)
I'm so stoked you started it on the same day! That's the one thing I really missed doing it alone, no one to sound off to or share with.

Welllllll...I guess that even though peas are a borderline food, I'll gladly take that reference :) I know! We seem to be on the same wavelength with cooking and WOD'ing so I'm very, very glad to have you around, even if it's virtually for now. I need someone like-minded to lean on if this gets tough!

Oh I am so excited to plan our CF Games menu! The picnic to end all picnics! Now...eating Paleo abroad may be a bit challenging but I've learned enough that I think I'll be fine :)

I've been feeling like I'm getting too lax lately, so I'm not doing a strict Whole30, but I am really dialing back the treats. I'm limiting to 6 per month and I'm tracking them on my calendar.

My birthday falls into this challenge but considering a) the amount of tequila I have been drinking lately and b) the fact that I'm going to be 36 and have had 16 years of intoxicated b-days behind me I think I can handle it, lol.

Jen-I have the same problem, but with chocolate. I looked over the Whole 30 sample and couldn't get a sense of why one would need to buy it when there is already so much info on the site. In your opinion, what is it about the Whole 30 makes it worth buying?

I think it's a great resource for someone who is new to this way of eating and may need a quick reference for shopping, portion sizes, resources (there are FAQs that many find helpful). I have many friends and blog readers who email, text, or message me asking, "What about this?" or "Can I eat this and how much?", so I feel like it's a good reference. I agree, you can find a lot of info on the web and particularly their site, but it requires searching...not that big of a deal, but just not something that someone who's already hesitant to make a change is likely willing to do. Sometimes it just makes more sense to say, "Here...read this!".

Excellent points, Jen! It's true that there can always be an excuse not to eat clean. I lost a lot of weight and when people ask me how I did it, I tell them that it just came down to the fact that I wanted to eat well and be healthy more than I wanted the chicken nuggets and french fries. I've kept the weight off for 4 years, but I have to admit, I've been a little slack lately with my eating and drinking (It's definitely the libations for me, as well...I do love a good margarita!). Not that I'm going back to McDonald's, but I'm just not eating as clean as I used to. I need to kick my own ass. ;-)

It is definitely the libations for me, as well! I do love me a good margarita!

I thought about doing Whole30 but on the other hand, I have this tendency to splurge/indulge, if I know it's actually restricted. When I am not being restricted, I tend to actually stay on the track. Weird huh?

Not weird at all, Jos. My tendency is actually the same, as well...I'm just going through such a major life shift (all really great, but a shift nonetheless) that I felt it necessary and actually, a little bit fun...in a twisted sort of way. ;)
